Welcome!
Wilderness Trekkers is based in the Central Florida area with members throughout the Florida peninsula, as this is where a great number of our events take place. We are a multi-disciplined activities organization with a schedule offering events nearly every weekend. Kayaking and canoeing, hiking and biking, single day or multi-day events are planned mainly in Florida. We are a group of people that enjoy the out doors and are challenged by the adventure of exploring springs, trails, rivers, lonesome roads and the multitude of bikeways.
We welcome first time folks that want to try us out by joining us as a guest. Visit our on-line “Upcoming Trips” calendar, contact the host and join the adventure. Also, visit the “Join Us” link on the main menu for even more first time information or to become a member.member. |

Leadership through Dedicated Volunteers
Wilderness Trekkers is only possible due to event hosts and co-hosts that arrange the trip event, plan the particulars, and are the points of contact for their event. Our hosts have required experience and typically have trekked the event themselves. Wilderness Trekkers formalizes the requirements to be a host and looks forward to grooming more volunteers for a continuous and variety filled event schedule.
Review our Event Hosting main menu to view our commitment to ensuring qualified Hosts that inform and direct the events. Moreover, if you have the desire to promote outdoor activities with the company of others, step forward and be part of the leadership team. Volunteer to co-host a couple of events and ready yourself to be an event host. |
Uniqueness and Opportunity in Florida
Florida provides a unique degree of diversity for paddling, hiking and cycling. With the greatest concentration of springs anywhere in the world, it is typical that our schedule frequently includes such trips during the heat of the summer or even mid-winter. There are numerous dark water rivers too that flow best during the rainy seasons and contain uncharacteristic surprises such as stone basins, swift water runs, and cantilevered rock cliffs. Plus there are opportunities for coastal paddling bringing a whole different experience, especially during manatee season.
Central Florida has numerous public lands for hiking; places such as the Ocala National Forest, Tosohatchee Preserve, Little Econ Preserve, the Florida Trail, and the Florida Greenway.
For biking enthusiasts’, there are a number of Rails-to-Trails paths, and off-road trails perfect for the casual or serious biker. |

The Annual Gathering
Each year, the Wilderness Trekkers hosts a full weekend of camping, trips and training sessions. Speakers share special knowledge, unique trips and experiences. The extravaganza starts Friday evening with a potluck dinner, mixing with members – new and familiar; and an opportunity to plan your Saturday and Sunday paddling, hiking or biking. Saturday’s meals are provided as well as Sunday’s breakfast and lunch. A highlight is the Host Appreciation recognition at Saturday’s dinner. It is a special occasion to sit about campfires and chat, meet new friends, and pat the backs of old friends. Checkout the 2009 Annual Gathering photo album. |
