Santa Fe River Paddle/Camp.  Come join fellow Trekkers on a 2 day paddle down the Santa Fe River near High Springs, Fl. Gazetteer page 65. We will meet at the Santa Fe River Outpost (386) 454-2050 at 9 AM sharp. This will be a 20-mile paddle in 2 days, starting at the Outfitter's launch by US 441 just South of the Santa Fe Bridge. We will paddle upstream for 2 - 3 miles seeing a part of the river most have not done. After reversing our course back past the Outfitters, we will stop for the night at Lilly Springs to camp. Nature Ed has an agreement with Santa Fe Outfitters for groups to camp overnight. The cost for the Outfitter will be $15.00/ boat, and $8.00 per person at Lilly Springs. Nature Ed will provide firewood for the campfire. The group will continue down the river on Sunday morning and take out at the Hwy. 47 bridge. This is a new and exciting river paddle and camp. As always stated, this is primitive camping (though Lilly Springs has an outhouse). You will need to provide camping gear, 2 lunches, 1 dinner, and a breakfast. The Outfitter can provide transportation of some camping equipment to Lilly Springs. Reservations are required. Limited to 16 members and their guest. Mosquito Lagoon Paddle - I call this 10 mile trip the Beauty, and the Beast. Beautiful, clear, and shallow water surround endless shell lined islands. A visit to the forgotten city of Eldora. A climb up to the top of Turtle Mound, a prehistoric Indian site. Lunch will be at J.B's Fishcamp with return through the backcountry. The Beast, wind can turn the Lagoon into high frequency 1ft chop. The reward for punching through each wave is a saltwater slap in the face. This trip can turn into a grueling endurance test. The put-in is at Riverbreeze Park off U.S.1 between Edgewater and Oak Hill. Limited to 15 boats, no boats shorter than 13 ft. Reservations required. Members and non-members welcome. West Orange Trail Bike Ride - Meet at the Winter Garden Station. There is a parking lot right there. We will have a leisurely ride up to Apopka-Vineland Outpost (9 miles). There we will have a light lunch and then head back, another 9 miles. For those interested we can grab a bite to eat after the ride. I can take an extra bike if anyone needs one. From Orlando, take SR 50 west to 9th Street in Winter Garden. Take a right (head north) until you reach CR 438 (Plant Street). Take a left, and head west until you reach Winter Garden Station. Wekiva Springs Overnight Backpack - Meet at Sand Lake parking lot on Saturday morning for a 3 ˝ mile backpack to primitive Camp Cozy. After we make camp and have lunch we'll do some additional hiking on the Wekiva trails and return to the camp for dinner before dark. After breakfast on Sunday morning we'll make the return hike back to Sand Lake parking lot. Bring water and snacks for the trail as well as lunch, dinner and breakfast. Beginners are welcome. Big Tree Park Hike - This short hike is perfect for beginners. Big Tree Park is located on General Hutchinson Parkway 1/2 mile off 17-92 and 3 miles north of Hwy 434 in Seminole County. Blue Springs State Park Paddle - Join me to paddle the waters near Blue Springs State Park. Our route may include portions of the St. Johns River, Hontoon Dead River, Snake Creek and the old logging canals. Blue Springs is a favorite spot for manatees during the winter months. Arrive early and view them from the park's boardwalk area. Meet at 10 AM at the canoe launch area. Bring a lunch to eat along the way. Please let me know if you plan to attend. Lower Econ Paddle - Valentines trip from Snow hill Road to the St Johns.The first part of this trip is an easy paddle with high sandy banks and large oak trees gradually changing into grassy banks, palm cabbage and cattle. We enter the St Johns and paddle for about a mile to the take out at Hwy 46. Depending on wind this section can be very strenuous, distance @10 miles. Reservations required and max of 10 floating vehicles. Members & non-members welcome. Contact for the meeting location - I'll reconnoiter between now and then to assess water levels, put in and take outs and to watch out for housing infestations. Learn to Paddle, Hike, Camp. Join us for an educational campout at Clearwater Lake Recreation Area located in the Ocala National Forest, Paisley, 15 mi west of DeLand. There will be a clinic on tent set up if needed, Saturday morning between 9-11. A certified Red Cross Canoe and Waterfront Instructor will teach canoe/kayak paddling techniques at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Bring your own boat or request one through host. We’ll also take a 1 mile hike around the lake through a rare long leaf pine forest and is a home to many butterfly species. Sat night will be a group dinner where everyone should bring your favorite dish to share. Join us for the day or camp with us Saturday night but no advance reservations for this campground. Tosohatchee Overnight Backpacking - We will meet at the Information Kiosk off of Taylor Creek Rd. which is located between SR 50 by Christmas and the Bee Line Expressway. There is a $3 cost. This is a heavily wooded hike and campsite with an outhouse and a pump with untreated water. We will set up camp and then explore the area. More information will be provided upon registration. West Orange Trail Bike Ride and Dinner - Join us for a great afternoon ride beginning at the Winter Garden Station Trailhead. We’ll travel north through developments, orange groves and past Chapin Station with a beautiful xeriscape garden; cross a small stream, through planted pines, around a golf course and a wooded section with good tree cover and mostly hammock vegetation, and across a small lake. Our turn around will be Clarcona Horseman's Park & we'll ride back for dinner in town. Ride is 18 - 20 miles R/T. Take Hwy 50 through Winter Garden, north on Dillard Street right on Plant St. Trailhead is on your left. Reservations requested. Members and invited guests. Rock Springs Run Paddle - Join us for an 8-mile paddle (approx. 4-5 hours) on the clear waters of Rock Springs Run. This spring-fed waterway winds through the forests of Wekiva Springs State Park. There is a mixture of open river and tree covered canopy and usually abundant wildlife. We’ll stop for lunch along the way. Meet at King's Landing and shuttle to the Wekiva Marina. There is approximately $5 in put-in and take out fees. Canoes can be rented from King's Landing (407-886-0859) for $25.00 which includes the shuttle back. Blackwater Creek/Lake Norris Paddle - We will wind our way on Blackwater Creek to its headwaters at Lake Norris. The lake is lined with beautiful Cypress Trees that extend 50 yards out into the lake and it is a rookery for many Ospreys. We will paddle the perimeter of the lake through the Cypress Trees. Members and guests are welcome limit 12 boats. There are no facilities there for boat rentals so you must bring your own boat. Seminole Trail Hike - this is mostly packed dirt, runs in about a 3 mile loop, and you will be back where we started. Meet in the Seminole Trail Parking lot which is located right on SR 434 right before you get to Toll Road 417. It is easily marked with a large green sign. We will depart the parking lot at 9:30 AM sharp. Winter Park Chain of Lakes Paddle - We will explore Lake Virginia, Lake Osceola and Lake Maitland during this "Urban" Wilderness Trek. These beautiful lakes are connected by narrow canals built during the early part of the century to serve the logging industry and provide abundant opportunities to observe Osprey, Heron and Egret, and even an occasional gator. We will also be observing numerous homes and parks and possibly even have an encounter with the Winter Park Boat Tour. Further details and directions will be provided to registered participants. Long Key State Park Camp, Paddle, Hike - We will camp Friday and Saturday night in the primitive camping area of Long Key State Park in the Keys, MM 67.5. There are six elevated chickees connected with a boardwalk in the mangroves by the water's edge. There is a bathroom and cold running water, grills and picnic tables. We'll meet Friday afternoon and hike the Orb Trail within the park which is approx 1 hr. Or we can paddle out in the Gulf and watch the sunset. We have a choice of paddling trips on Saturday depending on the tides, seas, and weather. We can paddle to Ligumvitae Key (bay side) and Indian Key (ocean side) at MM 77.5. These are great historical sites which are very interesing. Or we can paddle the Canoe Trail within the park if the tide is right. Sat night we can dine out at Herbie's at MM 50 which is a local favorite. Sun morning we can head home, stopping at Key Largo MM 104.5 and paddle Dusenbury Creek. Reservations required. Members and invited guests only. Space is very limited/ Groups of 4 or less per chickee. Cost will be approx. $12.00 per person for the 2 nights depending on the final count. I've already reserved the site for the Trekkers and secured with a credit card so pre-payment to the host is necessary to secure your reservation. Details to follow. Moses Creek Hike - Join us an for approx. 4 mile hike at Moses Creek Conservation area. This is part of The St. John's River Water management district and is located about 1/2 hour south of St. Augustine. We will take a leisurely hike to explore this area stopping along the creek to have lunch. We saw slides of this scenic area at the annual gathering presentation. Event Host: Liz and Bob Rood. We will stop for lunch at Panera and then those interested can continue into Sanford, crossing the new bridge over I-4 and then return. Santa Fe River Paddle - Come join fellow Trekkers on a paddle down the Santa Fe River near High Springs, Fl. Gazetter page 65. Plan to paddle a 13-mile section from the Hwy 441 bridge just North of town to the Hwy 47 bridge. We will be going downstream, but the length may make it strenuous for some. This beautiful river boasts many springs along the way, including Lily (a must stop), July, Blue, Ginnie, and many more. You will see many wild Florida animals and wonderful hardwood trees along the banks. We will use the Santa Fe River Outpost (386) 454-2050 to shuttle our boats back to the put-in at the Outfitters. The fee will be about $15/ boat. Canoes/Kayaks are available. Reservations required. Members and invited guests only. Limited to 16 boats.
