Mosquito Lagoon
January 24, 2009 [ Back ]
The weather forecast called for a sunny day with a high of 70 degrees - it was right on target. We launched at River Breeze Park, in Oak Hill, paddled south about 2 miles to Goodrich Restaurant for breakfast.

We got there just in time to see a flock of white pelicans. We were able to get exceptionally close to them. In the large aquarium at the restaurant, there were several sea horses that had babies. When we were leaving, they were releasing the babies in the Mosquito Lagoon so they can feed on their own. After having a delicious breakfast, and hot coffee and Goodrich's Bird Nest Special, we were ready to move on.

Then we were off kayaking to Seminole Rest where Allen wanted to show us the Indian settlement built on top of an ancient Indian Mound. Seminole Rest consists of several prehistoric shell mounds dating from 2,000 BC to 1565 AD.

We returned paddling around the islands, watching many dolphins ( rather playful) , Ospreys, and even spotted a snow eagle. We all had a FANTASTIC time and met new friends. We'll plan another trip soon.

On Saturday afternoonJune 17th, 14 intrepid Wilderness Trekkers and their guests tackled the Mosquito Lagoon leaving from the New Smyrna Canaveral Seashore canoe launch. The weather was breezy, but we were able to make good progress up the east shore line. We met a manatee right next to the put-in, and another near Turtle Mound. The second one came to Mary Bruce?s kayak to be petted! We worked our way through the Shipyard Island Canoe Trail, and took a brief stop at the foot of Turtle Mound. We got back to the canoe launch and squeaked out of the park just before closing. The group ended the paddle with a short stop to watch the sunset at JB?s Fish Camp.
