Lyonia Preserve Weekday Hike -

2 lone Trekkers met at Lyonia Preserve to hike, look for scrub jays and check out the new environmental center, nifty gift shop and bakery. We had pleasant spring weather, sunny and dry with temps in high 70s by the end of the 4 1/2 mile loop hike. We had decided to go a little earlier than originally planned so it wouldn’t be too hot. With the sandy terrain, little shade and the hills it could become a tedious walk in hot weather. But we had a very nice hike and saw a possible fox squirrel, a rabbit, small birds and finally several scrub jays, including a couple that seemed quite interested in us. One perched on Eric’s head for several minutes. Eric Kendrick and trip host Erica Johnson can recommend this preserve.

Lyonia Preserve Family Hike -

Glad we got out early since this sandy, slightly hilly terrain had no tree cover. There were 6 of us who braved ~3 miles on a very slow paced hike in which we saw a variety of insects but the highlight of this park is the abundance and fearless Florida Scrub Jays. You can get so close that they will take food from your hands. All in all a great Hephalump expedition.
