Goethe Trailwalker Hikes -
Dunnellon Trailwalker hikes – Sat Apr 18. 2 WTers hiked 3 Trailwalker hikes: The 1st hike was our favorite, a scenic 2.5 mile woodland path, Holly Hammock Trail, in Ross Prairie State Forest . There’s a primitive campsite about 1 mile in. We saw a woodpecker and a pheasant. We met a group of birders on the way out. It’s also a popular equestrian area with an RV campground. The second hike was 2.5 miles of the yellow Tidewater trail in the Goethe State Forest . Mostly a sandy, wide trail but we enjoyed seeing a deer. After this hike we ate lunch at a picnic table in the peaceful campground area at the trailhead. The 3rd hike was 2 miles of the Black Prong trail system. The orange/red trail to the lower half of the blue trail. This trail is lower, moist but not muddy. There are many more trails to travel in Goethe Forest . It was definitely worth the trip and the trailhead campgrounds all have clean, flush toilet restrooms. Our only regret was not taking time to enjoy the Boomtown days arts/crafts in Dunnellon.
