Paddlers Gathering -

About 70-80 paddlers from all over the state, with memberships in over 15 paddling clubs, met up at Chassahowitzka River campground the weekend of Oct 20-21. 16 Wilderness Trekkers attended - many thanks to WT'ers Sue Chisefsky, Carl Smith, Maraim Mohensin, Randy Alpha, and Carmen Velez who helped out in various ways. There were several trips offered each day, most with clear water. Trips included Chassahowitzka, Homosassa, Crystal River, Rainbow, Gum Slough, Weeki Wachee, and Nature Coast Kayak Trail. Weather was great for paddling, a little warm for tenting, and there was only very short rainshower on Fri evening during our evening paddle. The pot luck dinner Sat night was scrumptious! We gathered at the pavilion for dinner and campfire. Attendees were enthusiastic and agreed the event should continue. This was the 4th time it has been held in recent years. A new name was voted on - "FL Paddlers Rendezvous 2007" will be hosted by another club and two clubs offered to do so. Be sure to come to it next fall!

Chassahowitzka Paddle Trip -

Five Trekkers and two guests with kayaks explored the beautiful Chassahowitka River on Sunday, June 4, 2006.  We saw plenty of alligators, some of them small youngsters.  Great Blue Herons were spotted, as well as an owl and plenty of wading birds.  There was no sign of Whooping Cranes, which winter in the adjacent Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge.  They have probably all flown north for the winter.  It was a quiet day on the water, marred only by two power boats who roared through our flotilla of kayaks.    Fortunately no one capsized in the wake.  Thanks much for the Trekkers and guests who made the trip, and we look forward to paddling with you again in the future.
