[Some things to Know] [Directions] [For More Info] [Register Today]
Directions to River Forest Group Camp:
I-4 to exit #118 DeLand (SR 44), and go west
through town on SR 44 (New York Avenue) across St. Johns
River, 4.3 miles
River Forest offers flush
toilets, showers, sites for tents or trailers plus an indoor meeting room with
fireplace and screened eating area. WT will provide toilet paper and
towels. General Information Entrance
Gate: The
gate at the entrance to the camp should always remain closed to discourage any
“outside visitors”. We ask that
you please register inside the meeting hall prior
to setting up camp. Name
Badge: If
you have a Member’s Name Badge please bring it with you. We will have name tag
blanks on site, and we encourage you to wear them throughout the weekend. Facilities:
Shower and bathroom facilities are located in the same building as the meeting
room. Please clean up after yourself, as we have no assigned cleaning crew here.
There are several outdoor water faucets spaced around the campground where
campers can get potable water. There
are no electric outlets available to campers, so flashlights
are a must. The kitchen is off
limits at all times to anyone except the professional chef and his staff. Communications:
As a courtesy to all, please turn off sound for cell phones
and beepers. Friday
Afternoon:
No activities are planned for Friday afternoon, so kick back and enjoy the River
Forest property. It’s a great
place to relax. Hang your hammock and do as you’d like until Happy Hour. Happy
Hour: From 5:30-6:45 p.m. Friday night, we’ll have a Happy
Hour/Get to Know Your Neighbor in the meeting room. Don’t miss this
opportunity to meet your fellow Trekkers and enjoy the hearty appetizers that
we’ll all bring to share. Campers should plan on providing their own
beverages, BYOB, cups, plates & utensils.
Ice will be provided. You’re on your own for Friday night dinner if
hearty appetizers are not enough. We will have a menu available in the meeting
room from JC’s Lobster Pot for phone-in-take-out-orders. JC’s is located 2
miles east on SR44 from the camp and has very good food. There is also a
convenience store with Subway sandwiches and supplies a little further east of
the St. Johns River on SR44. Hiking:
Early
November is hunting season. Bring red,
orange or bright colors to wear when hiking the woods around River Forest
Campground. Hike in numbers…scare off the animals and hunters. Campfires:
In the evenings, we’ll have a campfire complete with songs or stories and
campfire chat. Please bring your
camp chair, and flashlight or headlamp to see the song sheets. Wilderness
Trekkers has arranged for a community campfire in the main ring under the large
oak. We request no individual
campfires for this event. If you need to cook over a fire, please
utilize the community campfire or your cookstoves. Considerate
Conversations: The
camaraderie will no doubt continue late into the night, but participants are
expected to keep the volume down so those who choose to turn in early can do so.
Conversations after campfire should be continued in the meetingroom. Please keep
the side conversations down as the speakers are doing their presentations.
If you feel you need to visit with your neighbor, please feel free to go
outside. Our volunteer speakers have put a lot of time and effort into their
presentations; please give them your undivided attention. Fireplace:
If there is
a fire burning in the inside fireplace, please feel free to help keep it going.
Wood is cut and available just outside the door. Your assistance is welcomed and
necessary! For
the well
being of all, no
Pets, Radios, TVs, or Firearms
are allowed on Wilderness Trekker events.
